PUAOPE010 Operate an automated external defibrillator in an emergency
This unit covers the competency required to operate an automated external defibrillator (AED) to defibrillate a casualty in an emergency situation.
The PUAOPE010 unit includes advanced techniques for management of the administration of an AED in line with the requirements of the Australian Resuscitation Council and State and Territory regulatory bodies. The unit also involves working with personnel who are engaged in the resuscitation of the casualty.

In this Unit the student will learn to:
1 Check equipment
Pre-use check of safety and effectiveness of equipment is undertaken, in accordance with organisational procedures and manufactures’ instructions
Minor faults are diagnosed and repairs are carried out to restore equipment to working order, in accordance with organisational procedures and manufactures’ instructions
Faults and defects are reported and recorded, in accordance with organisational procedures and manufactures’ instructions
2 Attach and operate equipment
Equipment is set up, in accordance with organisational procedures and manufacturers’ instructions
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is attached and operated according to manufacturers’ guidelines and safety procedures
Work is undertaken cooperatively with whilst conducting resuscitation techniques using an AED
3 Recover and restore equipment
Equipment is disinfected or discarded, in accordance with organisational procedures and manufacturers’ guidelines
Equipment is charged, stored and safeguarded against damage or loss, in accordance with organisational procedures and manufacturers’ guidelines
Reports are completed and submitted to appropriate personnel
